What you are missing is the root of what they are discussing which is not postmodernism as you describe. There is a separate philosophy movement also known as postmodernism that is very famous and important within philosophy and political science circles. It has been in use since at least the 1970s (by Francous Lyotard) as the term for the field even though it is amorphous. See the Stanford Dictionary of Philosophy for more.
